Hainsey is week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
It is a terrible time to be a Penguins’ defenseman because they just can’t stay healthy. Hanse left Wednesday’s game in Philadelphia and did not return and is expected to miss at least a few weeks with an upper-body injury.
The Penguins have acquired Ron Hainsey from the Hurricanes in exchange for a 2017 2nd round pick and Danny Kristo.
Hainsey is a mobile, veteran defenseman, who has scored four goals with 10 assists (14 points) in 56 games this season. He could make his Penguins debut in the outdoor game on Saturday. The injuries to Trevor Daley, Olli Maatta and Kris Letang necessitated this move for the Penguins.
Hainsey is ill and will be a game-time decision tonight.
Hainsey did not take part in the Hurricanes morning skate because of the illness and will be replaced by Jay Harrison if he can't go tonight vs. the Maple Leafs. Hainsey averages 21:20 TOI and has 10 points (3G / 7A) with a minus-9 rating in 43 games.
The Canes, looking to fill the void left by injured defenseman Joni Pitkanen, signed free-agent defenseman Ron Hainsey on Thursday.
General manager Jim Rutherford said Hainsey would receive a one-year, $2 million contract.
He played 47 games for the Jets last season, with no goals and 13 assists. He led Winnipeg in blocked shots (123).
