The Calgary Flames have signed defenceman Dennis Wideman to a five-year, $26.25 million contract after acquiring his rights from the Washington Capitals in exchange for blueliner Jordan Henry and a 2013 fifth-round draft pick.
Wideman finished in the top 10 among defencemen with 46 points, including 11 goals. He led all Capitals blueliners with 113 hits and 132 blocked shots.
Wideman moves back into the top four. The Kitchener, Ontario native has carried the offensive load for the Caps blue line with five goals and 21 points through 32 games.
Wideman will play tonight on the third defensive pairing. Last season, the right-handed shooter scored 10 goals and 40 point in what was deemed an off season. With Mike Green and John Carlson manning the right side of the ice, expect Wideman's role to decrease significantly.

Wideman likely needed a maintenance day as the Caps have not re-called any defensemen. Last season, the right-handed shooter scored 10 goals and 40 point in what was deemed an off season. With Mike Green and John Carlson manning the right side of the ice, expect Wideman's role to decrease significantly.
Dennis Wideman's “charley horse” in the preseason seemed like cause for concern. The Capitals defenseman did miss the final month of play last season with right leg hematoma and compartment syndrome. Wideman told reporters not to worry, because it was in the other leg. But he has been knocked around in camp and left Wednesday's practice early while teammates were doing sprints.

Last March, it was a seemingly innocent collision with the Hurricanes' Tuomo Ruutu that ended Dennis Wideman's season. It didn't look terribly bad at the time, but Wideman left with a leg injury that turned into hematoma and compartment syndrome.
Wideman is clearly bruised from the incident but should be OK. Last season, the right-handed shooter scored 10 goals and 40 point in what was deemed an off season. With Mike Green and John Carlson manning the right side of the ice, expect Wideman's role to decrease significantly.
“I’m 100 percent as far as skating and everything goes. I’m 100 percent,”
Wideman sounds confident in his ability to play up to his potential this season. Regardless, he will need to compete with John Carlson and Mike Green for valuable offensive minutes -- a task that is clearly easier said than done.
Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman again stepped onto the ice with the Capitals’ “Black Aces” and are expected to miss the first game of the second-round series against the Lightning on Friday night.
Knuble was on the ice in full pads before the Caps’ optional morning skate Thursday along with injured defenseman Dennis Wideman. Both coach Bruce Boudreau and Knuble termed the 38-year-old “day-to-day.”
